Flag of Australia

Adopted following Australia's federation in 1901, the national flag emerged from an international design competition attracting 32,823 entries. Five nearly identical designs won the prize, created by contestants including Annie Dorrington and Ivor Evans, a 14-year-old schoolboy. The flag combines three key symbols: the Union Jack acknowledging British settlement, the Commonwealth Star representing the federation's states and territories, and the Southern Cross constellation.

The blue background represents the Southern Hemisphere location, while the seven-pointed Commonwealth Star — modified from six points in 1908 to include Papua's territory — symbolizes Australia's federation. Formally designated as the national flag in 1953, September 3 is celebrated as Australian National Flag Day.
