Flag of Belarus
The flag of Belarus features two horizontal bands — red on top covering two-thirds of the hoist and green along the bottom — with a vertical red-on-white decorative stripe running along the hoist side. Adopted by referendum on 14 May 1995, the design replaced the white-red-white flag used since independence in 1991 and closely echoes the Byelorussian SSR flag without Soviet emblems.
Red symbolises the past, the sacrifice and courage of Belarusian history, while green represents hope, renewal, and the country's vast forests and farmland. The ornamental pattern is drawn from traditional Belarusian rushnik embroidery — originally based on a 1917 ritual cloth woven by Matrona Markevich — and evokes craft, agriculture, and national heritage.
