The flag of the Central African Republic has four equal horizontal bands of blue, white, green and yellow, crossed at the centre by a vertical red band. A yellow five-pointed star sits in the canton on the blue band. The design fuses the Pan-African colours of green, yellow and red with the blue, white and red of France, the former colonial power.
The flag was designed by Barthélemy Boganda, the founding father of the republic, and adopted on 1 December 1958 when the territory became an autonomous republic within the French Community. Boganda intended the red band to cross the other stripes as a symbol that Europeans and Africans share the same blood. It has remained unchanged since full independence in 1960.
