The flag of the Dominican Republic displays a blue and red quartered field divided by a broad white cross, with the national coat of arms at its centre. The basic design was conceived by Juan Pablo Duarte, founder of the independence movement known as La Trinitaria, and was adopted in its current form on 6 November 1863 during the War of Restoration against Spain.
The white cross stands for salvation and peace, blue represents liberty and the sky, and red recalls the blood shed by those who fought for independence. The coat of arms shows a shield framed by laurel and palm, holding four Dominican flags, a cross, and an open Bible showing the verse Y la verdad os hara libres. It is the only national flag in the world to feature the Bible.
