The flag of Ecuador is a horizontal tricolour of yellow, blue, and red with the national coat of arms at the centre. The yellow band is double the width of the other two. The colours descend from the banner Francisco de Miranda designed in 1806, later adopted by Gran Colombia, which also gave Colombia and Venezuela their closely related flags.
The design was formalised in its current form on 26 September 1900, now commemorated as Flag Day. Yellow represents the abundance of the land and its crops, blue the sky and the sea between Ecuador and Spain, and red the blood shed by patriots in the struggle for independence. The coat of arms, showing Chimborazo and the Guayas River under a condor, distinguishes Ecuador's tricolour from its sister flags.
