The flag of Guatemala is a vertical triband of sky blue, white, and sky blue, with the national coat of arms at the centre. Adopted on 17 August 1871 by decree after the Liberal Revolution led by Justo Rufino Barrios, it replaced a horizontal arrangement used since 1851 and restored the vertical orientation associated with the United Provinces of Central America.
The blue bands represent the Pacific and Atlantic oceans that flank Central America, as well as the sky, while white stands for peace and purity. The coat of arms features the resplendent quetzal, Guatemala's national bird and a symbol of liberty because it cannot live in captivity. Below it rests a scroll marked 15 de Septiembre de 1821, the date of Central American independence, framed by rifles, swords, and a laurel wreath.
