Flag of India

India's national flag, called the Tiranga (tricolour), was officially adopted on 22 July 1947. Saffron represents courage, white symbolizes peace and truth, and green represents fertility and prosperity. The design evolved from proposals by Pingali Venkayya, who originally incorporated a spinning wheel (charkha) representing Gandhi's vision of self-reliance.

The charkha was replaced with the Ashoka Chakra, an ancient symbol from Emperor Ashoka's reign in the 3rd century BC, representing dharma (moral law). The 24 spokes of the wheel represent the 24 hours of the day, symbolizing continuous progress. The flag reflects India's pluralism — saffron for Hindus, green for Muslims, and white for other religious communities.
