The flag of Jamaica is a gold saltire on a field divided into four triangles: green at the top and bottom, and black at the hoist and fly. Adopted on 6 August 1962, the day Jamaica became independent from the United Kingdom, the design was developed by a bipartisan parliamentary committee after an earlier horizontal proposal was found to closely resemble Tanganyika's newly adopted flag.
The original explanation ran Hardships there are, but the land is green and the sun shineth. Reworked in official usage, black now represents the strength and creativity of the Jamaican people, gold the natural wealth and sunshine of the land, and green the lush hills, plains, and hope for the future. Jamaica is the only nation whose flag contains no red, white, or blue.
