Flag of Luxembourg

The flag of Luxembourg is a horizontal tricolour of red, white, and light blue in three equal bands. The colours derive from the historic coat of arms of the Counts of Luxembourg, which depicts a rampant red lion on a field of ten blue and white stripes. First used in the mid-19th century, the flag resembles that of the Netherlands — its most noticeable distinction being the lighter shade of blue.

To prevent persistent confusion with Dutch vessels, Luxembourg formally standardised its flag on 23 June 1972, fixing the exact blue. A second maritime ensign, depicting the historic red lion on blue and white stripes, is also flown from Luxembourgish ships. The red-white-light-blue tricolour remains the everyday symbol of the Grand Duchy.
