Flag of Marshall Islands

The Marshall Islands adopted its flag on 1 May 1979 when the country became self-governing under the Compact of Free Association, six years before full independence in 1986. The design was created by Emlain Kabua, the wife of then-President Amata Kabua, making it one of the few national flags whose designer was a head of state's spouse.

The deep blue field represents the Pacific Ocean. Two widening diagonal stripes of white over orange rise from the lower hoist toward the upper fly, with the white stripe representing the Ratak (sunrise) chain and orange the Ralik (sunset) chain of islands. A large white 24-pointed star in the upper hoist marks the 24 electoral districts, the four longer rays highlighting the four main cultural centres of the republic.
