Flag of New Zealand
New Zealand's flag features a blue field with the Union Jack in the canton and four red stars with white borders representing the Southern Cross. The design was adopted in 1869 and given statutory recognition in 1902.
The Union Jack represents historical ties to the United Kingdom. The Southern Cross indicates New Zealand's location in the South Pacific. In 2015-2016, New Zealand held referendums on flag redesign, but nearly 57% of voters chose to retain the current flag, preferring to honour the country's historical connections alongside its modern identity.
