Flag of the Philippines

The Philippine flag features a white equilateral triangle on the hoist with a golden sun and three stars, and horizontal bands of blue above and red below. Designed by Emilio Aguinaldo, it was first displayed during the Battle of Alapan on 28 May 1898.

The eight rays of the sun commemorate the provinces where the original anti-Spanish rebellion began, while the three stars represent Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao. Uniquely, the Philippines is the only country permitted to fly its flag inverted during wartime to signify a state of war.
