Romania's flag consists of three equal vertical stripes of blue, yellow, and red. The colours represent "Liberty (blue), Justice (yellow), Fraternity (red)," symbolism first attributed during the 1821 Wallachian uprising. The 1866 Constitution established these as official colours.
Under communist rule, the coat of arms was added to the centre, but following the fall of communism on 27 December 1989, Romanians removed the emblem and returned to the simple tricolour. This restoration symbolized the nation's return to traditional values and freedom from authoritarian rule.
