Flag of South Africa

South Africa's flag was designed by Frederick Brownell and adopted on 27 April 1994 during the nation's historic first democratic election. The flag features a horizontal Y-shape in green, dividing a red upper field and blue lower field with a black triangle at the hoist, all bordered by narrow white and gold stripes.

Remarkably, it contains six colours — the most of any national flag. Three colours derive from the old South African Republic flag, while three come from the African National Congress flag. The Y-shape symbolizes the convergence of diverse elements within South African society. Originally intended as temporary, it became so popular it was made permanent.
