Thailand's flag consists of five horizontal stripes — red, white, blue, white, and red — with the central blue stripe twice the width of the others. Adopted on 28 September 1917 by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI), the colours represent "Nation-Religion-King."
Red symbolizes the land and its people, white represents the religions practised throughout the nation, and blue represents the monarchy. According to legend, the king ordered the new design after seeing the old elephant flag flown upside down. Some historians attribute the blue to Thailand's wish to show solidarity with the Allied powers during World War I.
