Description

  • A vertical red stripe at the hoist with three equal horizontal stripes of green (top), white, and black (bottom)
  • The four colours are the Pan-Arab colours, each representing a different Arab dynasty: green for the Fatimids, white for the Umayyads, black for the Abbasids, and red for the Hashemites
  • Designed by Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, the flag was adopted on 2 December 1971 — the date of the UAE's formation from seven Trucial States
  • It replaced the individual flags of the constituent emirates
  • Construction: the red vertical stripe occupies one-quarter of the flag's length at the hoist
  • The remaining three-quarters are divided into three equal horizontal stripes
  • Ratio 1:2
