Zambia's flag is distinctive among national flags for placing its emblems in the fly rather than at the hoist. It consists of a green field with three vertical stripes of red, black, and orange at the lower fly, and an orange African fish eagle in flight above them at the upper fly. Adopted on 24 October 1964 at independence from the United Kingdom, a minor revision in 1996 darkened the shade of green.
Green represents Zambia's lush vegetation and natural resources, red the struggle for freedom, black the Zambian people, and orange the nation's mineral wealth, especially copper on which the economy depends. The African fish eagle, taken from the national coat of arms, symbolises the people's ability to rise above their challenges and soar towards a brighter future.
