Flag of Burundi

Burundi's flag is divided by a white diagonal saltire into four triangular fields, with red at the top and bottom and green at the hoist and fly. A white disc in the centre bears three red six-pointed stars arranged in a triangle, each outlined in green. Red stands for the suffering of the independence struggle, green for hope, and white for peace.

The flag was adopted on 28 March 1967 after the monarchy was abolished, replacing an earlier design that featured a karyenda drum and sorghum plant. The three stars represent the national motto Unité, Travail, Progrès (Unity, Work, Progress) and are also taken to symbolise the country's three main peoples: the Hutu, Tutsi and Twa.
