Chile's flag, officially adopted on 18 October 1817, combines horizontal stripes of white and red with a blue canton containing a white star. Known as "La Estrella Solitaria" (The Lone Star), the flag's colours carry powerful meanings: blue represents the sky and Pacific Ocean, white symbolizes the snow-capped Andes Mountains, and red commemorates blood spilled in the struggle for independence.
The white star signifies Chile's independence and republican status. Early evidence suggests indigenous Mapuche troops during the Arauco War used a similar design: an all-blue flag with a white central star. The Chilean flag replaced an earlier three-horizontal-band design used briefly in 1812.
