The Five-star Red Flag became China's national symbol upon the People's Republic's proclamation on 1 October 1949. Designed by Zeng Liansong, the flag was approved by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, with its elements rooted in Communist ideology and Chinese tradition.
The red field represents the Chinese Communist Revolution, while red traditionally symbolizes good fortune in Chinese culture. The five golden stars represent the unity of China's four social classes — workers, peasants, scholars, and merchants — under the leadership of the Communist Party, represented by the single large star. The stars' arrangement creates a sense of hierarchy and cohesion central to the People's Republic's political philosophy.
