Flag of Cyprus

Cyprus adopted its flag on 16 August 1960 at independence from the United Kingdom. The design was submitted by Turkish Cypriot teacher Ismet Guney in a national competition and deliberately set aside the blue of Greece and the red of Turkey to remain neutral between the island's two main communities.

The white field represents peace, while a copper-coloured silhouette of the island takes its hue from the ore historically mined on Cyprus and from which the island derives its name. Beneath the map are two crossed green olive branches symbolising the hope for peace between Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Along with Kosovo, Cyprus is one of only two nations whose flag depicts a map of the country itself, and the design has remained unchanged since independence.
