The German Empire (1871–1919) used a black-white-red horizontal tricolour, combining the colours of Prussia (black-white) and the Hanseatic League (red-white).
The Imperial German flag (1871–1918) featured the black-white-red tricolour. Represented the unified German Empire under Prussian leadership. Was replaced after Germany's defeat in World War I.
