Flag of Germany

Germany's black-red-gold tricolour originated during the Napoleonic Wars when the Lutzow Free Corps volunteer unit wore black uniforms with gold buttons and red sleeve facings. These colours became symbols of resistance, formally adopted by the 1848 liberal democratic movements and later by the Weimar Republic.

The flag was banned by the Nazi regime in 1933 and replaced with the swastika, but was restored upon the Federal Republic's founding in 1949. Following German reunification on 3 October 1990, the black-red-gold became the flag of a unified Germany, representing unity, freedom, and the triumph of democracy over totalitarianism.
