The flag of El Salvador displays three horizontal bands of blue, white, and blue, with the national coat of arms at the centre of the white band. It was adopted on 17 September 1912, restoring the colour scheme of the United Provinces of Central America, the federal republic that briefly united Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and El Salvador after independence from Spain in 1821.
The blue bands stand for the sky and the Pacific and Atlantic oceans that border Central America, while the white represents peace and solidarity. The coat of arms features a triangle for equality and justice, five volcanoes for the original federation states, a Phrygian cap rising through clouds, and the motto Dios, Union, Libertad. The civil variant replaces the coat of arms with that motto in gold.
