The flag of Equatorial Guinea has three equal horizontal bands of green, white and red with a blue equilateral triangle at the hoist, and the national coat of arms centred on the white band. Green stands for the country's vegetation and natural wealth, white for peace, red for the fight for independence, and blue for the sea that links the mainland to the archipelago.
First hoisted at independence from Spain on 12 October 1968, the flag was flown plain under dictator Francisco Macías Nguema. After his overthrow in 1979, the coat of arms was restored to the flag on 21 August 1979. The arms feature a silk-cotton tree, six stars for the national territories, and the motto Unidad, Paz, Justicia.
