Flag of Ethiopia

Ethiopia's green-yellow-red tricolour originated from Emperor Menelik II's banner after the decisive victory over Italian forces at the Battle of Adwa in 1896, establishing Ethiopia as the only African nation to successfully resist colonization. In 1996, Ethiopia added a golden pentagram on a blue disc at the flag's centre, representing national unity.

The colours carry profound symbolism: red represents blood spilled in defence of the nation, yellow signifies peace and harmony among Ethiopia's diverse ethnic and religious groups, and green symbolizes hope and the land's fertility. These colours were historically used by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church before state adoption, and have become the foundational colours of Pan-Africanism, adopted by many African nations.
