Flag of Gabon
The flag of Gabon is a simple horizontal tricolour of green, yellow and blue in equal bands, with no emblem or device. Green represents the country's extensive forests and timber wealth, yellow recalls the equator, which cuts directly through the country, and blue stands for the Atlantic Ocean along the western coast.
Gabon adopted its first flag in 1959 as an autonomous republic; that version had a narrower yellow stripe and carried the French tricolour in the canton. On 9 August 1960, only days before full independence from France, the current design was adopted, giving the three bands equal width and dropping the colonial emblem. The palette deliberately substitutes blue for the Pan-African red.
