Flag of The Gambia
The Gambia's flag has three horizontal bands of red, blue and green, separated by two narrow white fimbriations. Red evokes the sun and the savannas, the central blue band depicts the Gambia River which runs the entire length of the country, and green stands for the land and its agriculture. The white stripes symbolise peace and unity.
Designed by the Gambian accountant Louis Thomasi, the flag was adopted on 18 February 1965 when the country became independent from the United Kingdom. Unlike many African flags of the period, it avoids Pan-African symbolism and instead builds a visual portrait of the nation itself. It remained in use unchanged during the short-lived Senegambia Confederation of 1982-1989.
