Georgia's Five Cross Flag was adopted on 14 January 2004, shortly after the Rose Revolution that ended Eduard Shevardnadze's presidency. It replaced the 1990 red-and-black flag that had been used since independence from the Soviet Union. The design is a revival of a medieval banner traced to the 14th-century Kingdom of Georgia.
A large red St George's cross on a white field divides the flag into four equal quarters, each charged with a smaller red Bolnisi-Katskhi cross. The white field stands for innocence, chastity, and wisdom, while the red crosses symbolise Christianity and the five holy wounds of Christ, reflecting the central role of the Georgian Orthodox Church in national identity. The United National Movement promoted the design before it became official.
