Flag of Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau's flag has a red vertical band at the hoist, charged with a black five-pointed star, and two horizontal bands of yellow over green on the fly. The Pan-African palette is read here as red for the blood shed in the liberation struggle, yellow for the sun and the harvest, green for hope and the country's vegetation, and the black star for African unity.

The flag was adopted on 24 September 1973, when the Partido Africano para a Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde (PAIGC) declared independence from Portugal. The design was the PAIGC's own party flag and was shared with Cabo Verde after that country's own independence, until Cabo Verde adopted a distinct new flag in 1992.
