Known as the Golden Arrowhead, the flag of Guyana features a green field with two isosceles triangles pointing forward from the hoist: a large gold triangle fimbriated in white, and within it a smaller red triangle fimbriated in black. It was designed by the American vexillologist Whitney Smith, who later founded the Flag Research Center, and adopted on 26 May 1966 as the country gained independence from the United Kingdom.
Each element carries distinct meaning: green for agriculture and forests, gold for mineral wealth, red for the zeal of nation-building, white for Guyana's many rivers, and black for the endurance of its people. The forward-pointing triangles together symbolise the country's dynamic progress.
