The flag of Haiti consists of two horizontal bands, blue over red, with the national coat of arms set on a white rectangle at the centre. According to tradition, the first version was born in May 1803 when revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines tore the white from a French tricolour, symbolically casting out European rule and leaving the blue and red of the African majority and mixed-heritage population who fought together for liberty.
The coat of arms shows a palm tree crowned with the Phrygian cap of liberty, flanked by drums, cannon, flags, and rifles above the motto L'Union Fait la Force. Although the design dates from the successful Haitian Revolution, the current version was restored on 17 February 1986 after the fall of the Duvalier regime, which had adopted a black and red variant.
