Hungary's flag of three equal horizontal stripes of red, white, and green was adopted during the 1848 Hungarian Revolution. Red represents strength, courage, and the blood shed in battles for independence. White symbolizes faithfulness and purity. Green stands for hope and Hungary's fertile lands.
The flag gained additional significance during the 1956 anti-Soviet uprising when revolutionaries cut out the Communist emblem, leaving a hole in the middle — creating a powerful symbol of resistance. After the revolution's suppression, the pure tricolour was officially restored in 1957.
