Indonesia's flag is a bicolour of red above white, adopted upon independence on 17 August 1945. Red represents courage and the human body, while white represents purity and the soul. These colours trace their origin to the 13th-century Majapahit Empire and were revived by Indonesian nationalists in the early 20th century.
The modern red-white flag was first flown in Java in 1928, though it was quickly prohibited under Dutch administration. The original flag, called Bendera Pusaka, was sewn by Fatmawati, wife of Indonesia's first president Sukarno, making it a symbol of both national and personal sacrifice during the independence struggle.
