Flag of the Delhi Sultanate

Flag of the Delhi Sultanate

Description

  • The Delhi Sultanate (1206–1526) was a succession of five Muslim dynasties — Mamluk, Khalji, Tughlaq, Sayyid, and Lodi — that ruled much of the Indian subcontinent before the Mughals
  • Construction: a green field with an off-centre black vertical stripe; this is the depiction in the Catalan Atlas (1375) representing the "lord of Delli"
  • Different dynasties within the Sultanate used different banners, including plain black (Mamluk) and green with Arabic inscription (later periods)

Trivia

  • At its height under the Tughlaqs, the Sultanate briefly controlled most of South Asia
  • The Qutub Minar in Delhi was begun by Qutb ud-Din Aibak, founder of the first (Mamluk) dynasty
  • The Sultanate collapsed when Babur won at Panipat in 1526, founding the Mughal Empire
