Description
- The Crown of Aragon (1162–1716) was a dynastic federation centred on Aragon that expanded across the Mediterranean — Catalonia, Valencia, Majorca, Sicily, Sardinia, and briefly Athens and Naples
- Construction: four red vertical stripes (palos) on a gold field — the Senyera — one of Europe's oldest continuously used flags, first attested in the 12th century
- Modern versions add the Aragonese coat of arms (tree of Sobrarbe, Cross of Íñigo Arista, Moor's heads, royal bars)
Trivia
- Legend attributes the four red pales to Wilfred the Hairy's blood dragged across his gold shield by Charles the Bald — a 16th-century invention
- Merged with Castile via the marriage of Ferdinand II and Isabella I in 1469, creating Spain
- The pales survive on the flags of Catalonia, Valencia, Aragon, the Balearics, and Roussillon
