Description
- Austria-Hungary (1867–1918) was the dual monarchy that succeeded the Austrian Empire after the Ausgleich (Compromise) of 1867, uniting the Austrian and Hungarian halves under one sovereign
- Construction: a red-white-red horizontal tricolour bearing two crowned shields — the plain Austrian bend beside the Hungarian arms (Árpád-striped with three mounds and double cross), each topped by its respective crown
- Used as naval ensign; the merchant flag used simpler horizontal stripes
Trivia
- One of Europe's great powers for half a century and the last multi-national empire to rule Central Europe
- Dissolved at the end of WWI into Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and parts of Yugoslavia, Poland, Romania, Italy, and Ukraine
- The assassination of its heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, at Sarajevo in 1914 triggered the First World War
