Description
- The Zand dynasty (1751–1794) was a short-lived Iranian ruling house founded by Karim Khan Zand, a Lur tribal leader remembered as one of Iran's fairest rulers
- Construction: a white triangular banner with a green border and the Shir-o-Khorshid (lion and sun) emblem in gold at the hoist — reviving the Safavid heraldic tradition
- Karim Khan refused the title of Shah, preferring Vakil e-Ra'aya ("Deputy of the People")
Trivia
- Karim Khan chose Shiraz as his capital and adorned it with monumental architecture, most notably the Arg-e Karim Khan
- The Lur-speaking Zands' grip on Iran fractured after Karim Khan's death; the Qajars absorbed their domains by 1794
- Zand-era Shiraz saw a golden age of Persian poetry, music, and carpet weaving
