Flag of the Republic of Ragusa

Flag of the Republic of Ragusa

Description

  • The Republic of Ragusa (1358–1808) was a small but diplomatically adept Adriatic maritime city-state — today's Dubrovnik — that preserved autonomy for 450 years between Ottoman, Hungarian, and Venetian power
  • Construction: a white swallowtail banner with a red border and the motto "LIBERTAS" in red block capitals — the word carved on every Ragusan public building
  • Ragusa was the first European state to recognise American independence (1776) and abolished the slave trade in 1418

Trivia

  • Its diplomatic mastery earned it a network of consulates across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the New World
  • Napoleon dissolved the Republic in 1808; Ragusa (Dubrovnik) became Austrian, then Yugoslav, then Croatian
  • Today's Dubrovnik city flag retains the LIBERTAS legend
