Description
- The Parthian Empire (247 BC–224 AD) was a Iranian Arsacid state that rivalled Rome in the east; no authenticated flag survives
- Construction: modern reconstruction — a black field bearing a large golden sun disc with radiating flame-like rays, drawing on Parthian coinage and the imperial solar cult of Mithra
- The Parthians are better attested by the Draco — a wind-sock dragon standard — which later spread to Sasanian, Roman, and steppe armies
Trivia
- Parthian cataphracts and horse archers defeated Crassus at Carrhae in 53 BC, one of Rome's worst military disasters
- The Arsacid dynasty used the title 'Great King of Kings', inherited from the Achaemenids
- Parthian control of the Silk Road made them crucial middlemen between Rome and Han China
