Description
- The Principality of Moldavia (1346–1859) was a Romanian Orthodox state east of the Carpathians, famous for its defiance of the Ottomans under Stephen III (Ștefan cel Mare, 1457–1504)
- Construction: a red banner bearing a gold aurochs head with a five-pointed star between its horns, flanked by a rose and a crescent moon — the founding legend-emblem of Voivode Dragoș (c. 1346)
- The aurochs is still on the Moldovan coat of arms and appears on Romania's arms beside the Wallachian eagle
Trivia
- Stephen the Great fought 36 battles defending Moldavian independence; Pope Sixtus IV called him Athleta Christi
- Moldavia united with Wallachia in 1859 to form modern Romania; its eastern half was annexed by Russia in 1812 (today's Republic of Moldova)
- The aurochs (European bison) was a real animal in medieval Carpathian forests — extinct in the wild by the 17th century
