Description
- The Kingdom of Castile (1065–1715) was the dominant Christian kingdom of the Reconquista; its union with Aragon in 1469 created the core of modern Spain
- Construction: a square red banner bearing a gold three-towered castle — the castillo from which the kingdom takes its name
- Arms of Castile adopted by Alfonso VIII in the late 12th century after an earlier lion banner gave way to the castle
Trivia
- The castle has appeared on Spanish royal and national arms continuously for over 800 years
- The kingdom gave its name to Castilian, the linguistic ancestor of modern Spanish
- Combined with León (1230) to form the Crown of Castile — the political unit that financed Columbus's voyage
