Flag of the Mataram Sultanate

Flag of the Mataram Sultanate

Description

  • The Mataram Sultanate (1586–1755) was the dominant Javanese Islamic state of the 17th century, covering most of Java from its court at Kotagede and later Kartasura
  • Construction: a red field charged with a white Islamic crescent at the hoist and two crossed blue-and-white krises (wavy-bladed Javanese daggers) — the regalia of Javanese sultanship
  • Fragmented in 1755 by the Treaty of Giyanti into the successor Sultanate of Yogyakarta and Sunanate of Surakarta, both of which survive today as ceremonial monarchies
