Description
- The Mataram Sultanate (1586–1755) was the dominant Javanese Islamic state of the 17th century, covering most of Java from its court at Kotagede and later Kartasura
- Construction: a red field charged with a white Islamic crescent at the hoist and two crossed blue-and-white krises (wavy-bladed Javanese daggers) — the regalia of Javanese sultanship
- Fragmented in 1755 by the Treaty of Giyanti into the successor Sultanate of Yogyakarta and Sunanate of Surakarta, both of which survive today as ceremonial monarchies
Trivia
- Founded by Senopati ing Alaga, whose dynasty produced Sultan Agung (r. 1613–1645), the greatest Mataram ruler
- Sultan Agung's forces besieged Dutch Batavia twice in the 1620s; he reformed the Javanese calendar, fusing Hindu Saka with the Islamic Hijri
- The kris as a royal emblem predates Islam and continues as a Javanese cultural symbol
