Flag of the Kanem–Bornu Empire

Flag of the Kanem–Bornu Empire

Description

  • The Kanem–Bornu Empire (c. 700–1893) was a long-lived Saharan state of the Lake Chad basin, ruled by the Sayfawa dynasty for over eight centuries
  • Construction: a horizontal tricolour of blue, yellow, and green — reconstructed from the banner described by 19th-century European travellers to the Bornu court
  • The empire merged Kanem (north-east of Lake Chad) and Bornu (south-west) after Kanem's dynasty relocated following Bulala attacks in the 14th century

Trivia

  • One of the longest-lived imperial dynasties in world history — the Sayfawa ruled for roughly 800 years
  • An early convert to Islam (c. 1085); Kanem became a major centre of Islamic scholarship in the Sahel
  • Final Shehu of Bornu defeated by the Sudanese warlord Rabih az-Zubayr in 1893; France absorbed the remnants into its empire
