Flag of the Republic of North Macedonia

  • The current design ended a trade embargo by Greece and was part of the 1995 Interim Accord

Trivia

  • The original 1992 flag used a 16-rayed Vergina Sun; Greece considered this a Hellenic symbol and imposed a trade embargo
  • The redesign by artist Miroslav Grcev eliminated the Vergina Sun while retaining sun symbolism
  • The country was renamed from 'the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia' to 'North Macedonia' in 2019 under the Prespa Agreement

Flag of North Macedonia

The flag of North Macedonia is a red field bearing a stylised yellow sun in the centre, with eight rays that broaden as they extend to the edges of the flag. Red has been the traditional colour of the Macedonian region on banners going back to the medieval period, while the yellow sun — termed the "new sun of liberty" — symbolises freedom and aspiration.

The current design was adopted on 5 October 1995, replacing a 1992 flag that had featured the 16-rayed Vergina Sun. Greece considered the Vergina Sun a Hellenic symbol tied to Macedon's ancient kings and imposed a trade embargo until it was removed. The redesign, by artist Miroslav Grcev, formed part of the 1995 Interim Accord between the two countries; the country itself was renamed North Macedonia in 2019 under the Prespa Agreement.
