Nigeria's flag was designed by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, a 23-year-old engineering student in London. His design was selected from nearly 3,000 submissions in a 1958 national competition and officially adopted on 1 October 1960. Green represents agriculture and natural wealth, while white symbolizes peace and unity.
The original design included a red quarter sun on the white stripe, but this was omitted by the competition committee in favour of simplicity. Akinkunmi was later awarded the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic for his contribution to Nigeria's national identity.
