Niger's flag consists of three equal horizontal bands of orange, white, and green, with an orange disc centred on the white band. Adopted on 23 November 1959, shortly before full independence from France in August 1960, it has an unusual near-square ratio of 6:7, among the most nearly square of all national flags. The design emerged from the period of autonomous self-government within the French Community.
The colours evoke the country's geography and aspirations. Orange represents the Sahara Desert that covers the north, the white band symbolises purity and the Niger River that gives the country its name, and green stands for the fertile southern savannah and hope. The orange disc represents the sun, and has been interpreted as a symbol of the sacrifices of the people.
