The flag of Nicaragua consists of three horizontal bands in cobalt blue, white, and cobalt blue, with the national coat of arms at the centre of the white band. It was adopted on 4 September 1908 under President Jose Santos Zelaya, continuing the colours of the United Provinces of Central America first flown in 1823.
The blue bands represent the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea that bracket the country, and the white stands for peace and purity. The coat of arms features a triangle for equality, five volcanoes for the former federation states, a Phrygian cap for liberty, and a rainbow rendered in the same spectrum as the flag colours, one of only a few national emblems to use a rainbow in this way. The surrounding inscription reads Republica de Nicaragua America Central.
