Description
- The Kingdom of Dahomey (1600–1904) was a highly organised Fon state in today's Benin, feared for its Agojie (all-female warrior corps) and its role in the Atlantic slave trade
- Construction: a red-bordered white field bearing a grey crowned elephant — the emblem of King Ghezo (r. 1818–1858) and the royal court at Abomey
- Earlier kings used a plain white banner; Ghezo's crowned elephant became the canonical representation
Trivia
- Ghezo ended Dahomean tribute to the Oyo Empire and reformed the economy around palm oil as the transatlantic slave trade collapsed
- The Agojie — popularly called "Dahomey Amazons" — numbered in the thousands and fought as royal bodyguards and line infantry
- French conquest under General Dodds (1892–1894) dissolved the kingdom; the abomey palace is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site
