Bhutan's flag was introduced in 1949 to mark the Indo-Bhutan Treaty and standardised in 1969 to its current form. The field is divided diagonally from the hoist's lower corner to the fly's upper corner, with a yellow triangle in the upper hoist and an orange triangle in the lower fly.
A white Druk, or thunder dragon, straddles the dividing line, its body curving across both colours while clutching four jewels (norbu) in its claws. The yellow half represents the secular authority of the king, the orange half the Buddhist spiritual tradition, and the white dragon the country itself, pure and sovereign. Bhutan's endonym, Druk Yul, means "Land of the Thunder Dragon," and the jewels symbolise national wealth and prosperity.
